In History, 11-15

On this day in 1900, American composer Aaron Copland was born in New York, NY. He is probably best known for his ballets Billy the Kid (1938), Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944). He began to suffer from symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in the early 1970s and gave up composing as a result. He died in 1990.

Copland was a man of dubious political loyalty and decadent morality. Nevertheless, he was a brilliant composer and is among my favorites.
